YILMAZ GÜNEY WAS A BADASS WHEN HE MADE YOL… FROM JAIL!

I’m often ashamed of the fact I know so little about the middle east. My country has been involved in some sort of conflict there since the 70’s and yet I have a hard time pointing out specific countries on a map. The animated film, Persepolis, opened my eyes and started me down a path of discovery both of the region and its people. Continuing on that path I just watched the 1982 film, Yol (The Road), written and directed by Yılmaz Güney WHILE HE WAS IN JAIL! Yeah, baller move. He gave detailed notes and storyboards to his assistant, Şerif Gören, who shot the film. Then later when Güney escaped prison he edited the film in Paris. Yeah, BALLER! The film tells the story of five prisoners on furlough returning to their homes, but despite the fact they’re no longer incarcerated they are still held captive by the sociopolitical and cultural problems of their country. I highly recommend this film and you can watch it for free on YouTube.
